History of Music Videos - Pioneers

One of the first music videos was made during the 1960s for The Animals song 'House of the Rising Sun'. This was filmed in full colour and featured the band playing along to the song. After that The Beatles started producing videos to go with their songs. A feature film was made for A Hard Days Night. More bands started to follow this trend with The Byrds making a video for their song 'Set you free this time'. The Beatles were the band that took music videos to the next level. Both Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane were released in full colour in 1967 as well as using strange camera angles to make the songs more of an art form. Music videos were becoming bigger by the late 60s. One of the most pioneering music videos was Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan. This featured the artist shuffling several cue cards with lyrics on. This video has been imitated many times in popular culture. Many bands made music videos in the late 1960s because it could promote the song more as well as the band.

History of Music Videos - Developments of Music Videos on TV

The popular TV show Top of the Pops was released in the late 1970s and this programme showed the most popular songs of the week. More importantly this was the videos that accompanied them. Many artists became very popular because of their videos. For example, David Bowie who released Ashes is Ashes which became very popular because of the video. In 1981, MTV was released which showed music videos 24 hours. By the time MTV released every artist was producing music videos and Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants and Madonna were famous for the way they did music videos. The decrease in the price of technology and the development of visual effects meant that artists could really promote their songs. Storylines were created for some videos which made it more interesting. In the late 80s MTV released more video channels like VH1 and MTV was brought to Europe. In the early 90s MTV began to list the directors because this showed the originality of music videos. The developments of music videos stayed at a steady level for a long time until the major advances on the Internet. The launch of Youtube in 2005 meant that artists could upload their own music videos for people to watch around the world. The band OK Go became very famous after many people viewed their video for Here it goes again because they used treadmills as an effect. The influence of the Internet had became massive and in 2008 Weezer released a video which featured Youtube celebrities for their song Pork and Beans.

History of Music Videos - Influential Videos

Most of the influential videos have cost a lot of money to make. The most expensive video of all time was the video for Michael and Janet Jackson's Scream which was released in 1995. However another Michael Jackson is probably known as the best music video of all time. Released in 1983 Michael Jackson's Thriller lasts for 14 minutes and is regarded as the best video of all time in a period where technology wasn't groundbreaking. It even features as number 1 on MTV's best videos of all time. The purpose of the video is to promote the artists and most videos do it just like that. In our video we would like to promote the artist frequently and by creating a performance, our video will conform to the conventions of a normal video. On the other hand there are exceptions to normal videos. The video for 'Under Pressure' by Queen and David Bowie runs through video clips showing people under pressure without a band performance. Computer animation in the 1980s was just taking off and techniques have been used in the popular songs 'Money for Nothing' by Dire Straits and 'Take on Me' by A-ha. In 'Money for Nothing' groundbreaking computer generated animation techniques made the video very popular. In fact this video was the second animation video to appear on MTV. Peter Gabriel also used stop motion animation techniques with help from Aardman to produce the video for 'Sledgehammer'. This proved to be successful and won 9 MTV music video awards. Today many artists upload their videos on Youtube and the popularity is determined by how many people have viewed that song. Lady Gaga has one of the most viewed videos on Youtube with 'Bad Romance' which has over 300 million views. Eminem is another artist who is popular on Youtube.

History of Music Videos - Analysis of Two Music Videos

Tenacious D - Tribute
The camera angles used during this video are long shots, medium shots and close ups to show what the band members are wearing. Its very important what the performers wear because its a good way to promote the band and to target a specific audience. The narrative follows the band members of Tenacious D and they are walking through a shopping centre where they come across a recording studio. The band members use the recording studio to record their single. Jack Black uses a guitar and this mise-en-scene indicates that the music is rock. Another story occurs at the same time when Jack Black imagines himself and Kyle Gass walking along the road and they encounter the devil in which they have to kill off with their music. Special effects are used where purple light comes from Jack Black. Furthermore, the devil is bigger in size which is seen as a special effect.

Michael Jackson - Thriller
At the start of this music video opening credits are there which show that this is more like a theatre production or a film. The actual song spreads out during the middle of the video with directors credits at the end. The narrative follows Michael Jackson taking his girlfriend to the cinema where they watch a scary film. On the way home they walk past a graveyard and the dead bodies begin to come alive. The well choreographed routine involving Michael Jackson starts. The camera angles used are close ups, extreme close ups and medium shots which show Michael Jackson as both a performer and actor in the narrative.

Two Door Cinema Club - Album Advert

Unlike other album adverts, the one done by Two Door Cinema Club has more information shown. The main information like band name and album name are shown but also the dates of their tour. The dates of the tour have a large 'SOLD OUT' over the venues. This could suggest that if they are sold out then they are a very good band and their album is worth buying. In comparison to the Marina and the Diamonds advert, there are the names of popular singles to indicate to the people that like them that the album is being released. The main image is a cat staring out at the audience. This relates to the actual album cover because that is the main image of the album. When concerning our advert, we would like to follow the names of singles idea and the image which grips the audience.
